Southern Clams GHG Emissions in 2010

Southern Clams Limited operate in the coastal waters of Otago. Transitionz Group was commissioned by Southern Clams to complete an assessment of carbon emissions in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol: A Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard1, consistent with the international standard for GHG accounting ISO 14064-1. This report presents the outcome of the assessment, and will show the progress that Southern Clams has made towards reducing its carbon emissions.

Emissions resulting from each type of activity were calculated using the latest emissions factors supplied by the Ministry of Economic Development2, and presented in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent [tCO2-e]. Emissions that resulted from various activities in 2010 have been summarised in Table 1, along with emissions from 2009 which were accounted for in a separate report on energy use also prepared by Transitionz Group Ltd in 20093. Emissions are forecast to remain relatively unchanged in 2011.

Southern Clams Greenhouse Gas Emissions 2009-2010

The following notes provide further detail to provide the background for some of the changes in emission levels seen between 2009 and 2010 in Table 1.

Notes:

  1. Emissions resulting from diesel combustion were significantly reduced in 2010. A large component of diesel consumption is due to freight deliveries to Christchurch. The weekly frequency of these trips was roughly halved in 2010 resulting in a net emission reduction of 34%.
  2. The increase in petrol emissions is due to the up scaling of harvesting in the Otago harbour using petrol fuelled outboard-motor craft.
  3. Under the GHG Protocol methodology the leakage and charge factors for commercial refrigeration systems are so varied it is difficult getting a meaningful default value. Under this scenario, the leakage information must be provided by the service agents. According to the contractors4, no refrigerant was added or removed from site in 2010, therefore no emissions are reported. Over the next couple of reporting periods, we would expect to see this component of the emissions to fluctuate and eventually lead to an average value that can be applied.
